Walking Group 2021

The Walking Group meets on the third Tuesday of every month.

April 20th - Bayton and the River Rea

It was with some excitement that a small group met up for our first (covid secure) walk this year. It was a beautiful spring morning as we set off from picturesque Bayton Church to explore the Rea Valley. There were lovely open views, lambs, blossom and the first greening of the trees. Sarah had chosen a peaceful and varied walk - it was even warm enough to sit and enjoy the sun for quite a while at the halfway point. We finished off with a treat - lunch on the new terrace at The Bell Inn, fabulous baguettes and chips.

18th May - Little Witley and Wichenford

A three mile walk from Little Witley Village Hall. Sarah led us towards Wichenford with views to the Malverns and through apple orchards in beautiful blossom. It passed the farm shop at the end for anyone needing to stock up on tomatoes or asparagus. Lunch was at Great Witley Tearooms

15th June - Menith Wood

Trina and Caroline led a lovely walk around Menith Wood. It was about 5k with varied terrain and amazing views from the trig point. The only livestock likely to cause problems were goats. Lunch was at The Bell, Pensax

20th July - Too Hot!

In the midst of a mini heatwave it was decided that it was far too hot to walk! Sarah kindly hosted everyone in her garden for some gentle exercise and a chance to collapse with a cold drink.

17th August - Bewdley and Devil's Spittleful

Wendy led a 5 mile walk from Bewdley following the river down to Blackstone, we crossed the Severn on the bypass bridge then walked to The Devils’ Spittleful Nature Reserve. A convenient log let us rest awhile before the ascent and then everyone scrambled up the sandstone outcrop of the Spittleful and stayed there until an unleashed and untrained dog had finished upsetting the cattle. We adjusted the route to avoid these cows and walked up over the SVR to Burlish Top and through the old USAF hospital base. Back down to the river then and we followed the opposite bank into Bewdley and through the Town Museum. Lunch was at The Hop Pole Inn.

21st September - Stanford Bridge

On a wonderful early autumn day Sheena showed us a varied and lovely 5 mile walk up the hill from Stanford on Teme to Upper Sapey. It was gently undulating with views back to Abberley Hill. A refreshment stop on the brow of a hill overlooking the landscape in the sun broke the route and gave more chatting time. Just a hiccup with a field full of frisky looking cows which had arrived since Sheena's recce. A friendly young farmer on his quad bike pointed us in the right direction to avoid them! It was a mix of farmland, woodland and roads and we emerged above Stanford Court before heading back to the cars and a lovely lunch at The Den.

19th October - Edvin Loach

The walk began at Edvin Loach church - Sarah led the four ladies who had decided to risk the rain on a grey morning on a 4.5 mile walk. Firstly through the churchyard then followed by a climb over a locked gate, then through woodland. The walk had excellent views and was followed by lunch at Upper Sapey Golf Club where another member joined the group for some socialising. Some livestock and mud was encountered!
